- Why bid 2♣ in an instant tourney with a partner that may not understand your bidding?
- I hate bidding 2♣ with humans because they always do this stuff - especially in an instant tourney
- I bet East was a robot
- 4 ♥: West probably has 5332 and east probably has 3343
- North probably has a very weak hand
- I should pass
People do disruptive stuff much more in Instant tourneys because of the time pressure it puts ops under. I do the same thing myself in 5 minute Chess where it's much more effective because if they run out of time, they lose.
So my next thought is:
I should stop playing Bridge like a Chess player.
One thing I always do in instant tourneys is to look quickly at each profile to see what kind of bids they are likely to understand.
I have bid the unusual 4NT with a pick-up partner but would not do it in an 'instant'.

1. I was planning to rebid 2N. (3♦ is just suicide.)
2.,3. Instant tournaments on BBO are robot tournaments.
4., 5.
6. I'm not sure what your advanced(?) robot partner would do then, but when I uploaded the deal to a teaching table and passed 3♠ as South, my basic robot partner

1. It would be easier had you opened 1♦.
2. But 2♣ is perfectly reasonable.
3. Now you can double (T/O) and convert partner's 4♣ to 4♦.
1.,2. I would have opened 1♦ with a human 2/1 partner unless we had special agreements like
2♣(strong)-2♦(waiting); 3♥ = GF, 4H5+D
3. If you double,

My mistake. I thought you meant the 30s per decision free tournaments.
These tournaments are contaminated by actual people.
Mind you I'm still having trouble understanding the constant cavilling and complaining about inconsistent robots. I sometimes wonder if the people kvetching querulously about robots spend any time playing with people at and below my standard.
Amongst the totality of bridge players, I'm probably somewhere in the middle.
I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to play with me as a partner - even on a desert island - unless you really enjoy alliteration and bad jokes.
I've only ever tried the weekly free - it seemed pointless because you can play the hands over and over again until you get it 'right'. I suppose this explains why they aren't listed on the competitive menu.

As Advanced, although I'm not sure a BBO robot, whether basic or advanced, is "someone who has been consistently successful in clubs and minor tournaments".
Maybe it's time to reveal that I didn't start this thread because of anything stupid GiB did.
Does
remind you (the reader) of anything?

4♦ is also possible but we won't find hearts, then, even if partner has five of them.
As for not opening 2♣ with a human: I think the robots are quite human in that respect.

Presumably the famous hand where a pro player jumped to 6D on a four-card suit in a mostly blind auction, rather than bidding their long suit. Of course, 6D was the only making slam.
I'm not bidding 6H here though.
