After some extremely careful bidding, where GIB and I danced around the head of a pin, Buck Mulligan's face smiled with delight and bid 7.
Usually, when this happens and Kinch or Stephen don't double I figure I'm safe, the lead will be made and I can just claim and gaze out across the parapet to the roiling sea while stroking my stubble with my palps.
Not this time.
West leads the 5 which I politely collect in hand and claim: rejected.

In the end, I made it, but it seems it was divine intervention and not good judgement.
So did three others.

You claimed at trick 1? The defenders can now see all of the cards and are defending double dummy. And they still bungled the discards?

I know right. That's GIB for you "suckers and losers". It comes from a best hand Daylong - proof if you needed it - that the robots don't peek!

Am I being stupid, I can't see what happened in the play anywhere, it seems to be a very good contract, trumps 3-2 or if they're 4-1 then you need clubs 5-2 or better or stiff J.

OK, I also thought it was a pretty good contract. I was pretty happy with myself all the way through and kept claiming and GIB kept refusing. Finally I just played it out.
Then, when I went over it the double dummy was saying I should go -1 at trick 6. but I still can't see it!!!
Here's how I played it.
I must have done something wrong, but escaped.

As to auction, what was 3 ? Normal 4 card stayman ?

Our auction would be:

2N-3(5 card non puppet stayman)
3(no 5M not 2-3 or 2-2 in the majors)-3(4)
3(4)-4(cue agreeing )
4N(RKCB)-5(1/4)
5(Q?)-6 (yes and as I've already shown K with the cue, this shows the Q)
7

You can place partner with AQxx, KQxx, and 5 minor suit cards, so the grand cannot be worse than spades 3-2 and could easily be cold.

In which case it's an awful auction, N could have got Kxxx, Axx, AJx, AKJ as the S hand where 6 is not certain although decent

Yes you drew too many trumps, cash the QJ and when they don't break, ruff the third club high, then draw trumps

I suspect the robots were kind because in their simulations, the hand you actually had was excluded, because if you had that hand you could simply have ruffed a club in dummy.
