Pass in tempo. Partner still has a call. If it passes out, I can live with defending 3.

I think it was a little stronger, but standards are slipping.

If you are going to bid 3, would it not be better to do it via a Double to show the clubs at the same time? B-)

Marshall Miles, back in the day, would have loved to be able to overcall 3, and I think one of Meckwell did something similar once. I have a LOT of respect for the overcall, but the only way I would do it would be if I had a club in with my spades.

I pass, but I do so knowing that this is probably me being too chicken, for the millionth time.

Btw, 3 is infinitely better than double, imo. Wtf do we do over a 3 or 4 advance? Over 4 we pass, since partner either has long hearts or shortish spades (with both majors he bids 4) but he'd bid 3 with 4=4 or 4=5 majors and a modest hand.

PASS

BUT if I was going to guess I prefer 3n to 3s. Sure the spades are great but spades will far too often NOT be the proper place to play even if it is our hand. x is horrific (mikeh) since it leaves us in a cold dark place with a 3/4 heart advance while we can happily accept a transfer to 4h if we begin with 3n. In case you think I am in love with 3n forgetaboutit. IMHO
P = 9 3n=3 3s=2 4c = 1.5.

We'd bid 3NT, implying a flexible hand with (probably) four spades. I don't think we've got the values for that, but we have approximately the right shape for it.

I agree with pass. I don't see anything special about this hand, with so few of the high cards in the long suit. Make it AKQx xx xx KQ10xx and I'd be a lot more interested in bidding (though I haven't decided what I'd bid yet).

... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

partner has a 5224 7 count with the ak of clubs. obviously 1 swallow doesn't make a summer but on this hand 4 spades and 3 diamonds make, whereas 3nt is off the heart suit and the ace of diamonds.

i didn't hold the hand, but would be tempted by 3 spades. as to whether or not i would man up and bid it at the table, i think it's close but maybe not quite there.

Pass>X>3S

I dont consider it a close decision for me.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."
