Yes I'm finished, we've said our hand with 4 spades. Who knows, maybe 5h is down and 5 spades is a phantom, maybe 5h makes but 5s is -4 , maybe they can make slam and 5s pushes them into it

I mean say we do bid 5 spades and it comes back around to us at 6H what then?

Pass. You've already made a max preempt with your hand. Bidding again is bidding your hand twice. It may give the opponents a fielder's choice of doubling you or bidding on. The worst case would be to go for -500 or -800 and find that they can't make 5 .

bridge is a partnership game and partner, who sees the vulnerability and the bidding chose to pass. We have done a better job of describing our hand to him than he has to us, since there are a host of hands on which defending 5H undoubled is best. Sure, bidding COULD work well, but it is masterminding. It's not like we have a 9th spade.

My partner kept making these calls and I kept being pissed off. I can see the vulnerability too thanks p. Leave me alone.

Edit: I do think there is such a thing as 4S and 5S but I don't like overdoing it.

Everyone agrees with 4 the first time around, I take it?

I do. This is not a case where you should consider 5S first round, even with a bit more distribution, IMO.

It may be worse if they can then bid slam which they have not done so far (just a thought since we have no reason to assume we can beat 7h)

I can't imagine bidding more than 4 on the first round unless I had a hand on which I expected to make my bid.

Even tho partner is a passed hand, there is no reason to assume that they can bid a slam over 4 or, and this is fairly important, that they can make anything they do bid, whether it be at the 5 level or higher. Partner is allowed to be very short in spades and to hold enough nuisance stuff that they are doomed if they bid.

That isn't to say that I can't see bidding 5 if they bid over 4. However, I would need a much better playing hand than this one. KQJ10xxxxx void QJxx void is certainly a hand on which I would bid again, as a perhaps over-the-top example.

Maybe I formulated this badly. I am not sure there is a hand that would tempt me to bid 5 right away - it would have to be very extreme. But there are hands where I would be tempted to bid 5 if they compete over 4.

To modify Mike's example just a little bit - if you had KQJTxxxx - QJTx x then it seems right to compete over 5 or 5. But it's almost 50% that LHO has a doubleton spade, in which case you are quite likely to buy it in 4 (maybe doubled). You might also buy it there when he has a singleton, as he'll typically double rather than bid with 1444 or 1534 or 0544 and opener will usually pass.
