#5254 Pairs BBO Forums Howell Sun 2PM EDT (8PM CET) now posted.

approx. 20 boards, 10 boards, 1 board per round, depending on how many pairs register. It'll be [#pairs - 1] boards.
Host: diana eva
MPs, clocked, barometer on, robots allowed

EDIT: For players who want more, I'll post another identical tournament 20 minutes after this one is over, how's that?

If you'd like to register with a friend who is not a BBFer message me or post here and I'll add them to the custom list so that they can play.

Tourney will be visible on all versions on BBO 2 hours before start.

Thanks for running these.

Can anyone thing of a way to get more folks to turn out for these?
They're fun/friendly events and a good opportunity to "see" folks from the forums.

Any chance that we can get use of some robots to event out the fields?
(Robots might be better than subs)

Pairs with bots allowed shd mean more tables than the indy already. We can't add bot+bot pairs and we can't sub out robots either. That's why I prefer human subs, if a late comer shows up I can still sub them in, while if we use robots, there;s no way to remove the robots and replace with humans.

I'd show up more but I find most of my Sundays occupied somehow

Maybe it would help to run two tourneys, half as long? 20ish boards unclocked is a fairly substantial time commitment. Maybe run 2x10 instead, with like a 10-15 minute break inbetween?

Well the Howell format has an option to allow breaks within the same tourney - so we wouldn't need to create two, just put a break on one. Should I add a break to this?

I think it is not so much about the break, but more about giving people the option to play in only one of the two halfs.

OK. Then I will make this one board per round. There will be #pairs - 1 boards, with every pair playing against each pair once (10-12 boards maybe less)

And if people want another one, I'll set up one more. There's a "copy tournament" option for hosts, so it's easy to duplicate it in one click if needed. :)

Maybe I am in the minority here, but...

I'd rather play in long events than short.

If folks want to reduce the length of an event, reduce the number of rounds not the round length.
(Round transitions take time).

A ten board event with one board rounds is nothing more than a crap shoot.

Yes I agree, two boards per round should be minimum. And with, say, 8 pairs, a full Howell would be 7 rounds so 3 boards seems sensible.

But maybe splitting it up into two is not such a good idea with Howell.

Me, too. The BBO tournament schedule is full of events that run an hour or less. I view these BBF tourneys as special events for players who are interested in something more significant.

The shortest f2f club games and tourney sessions are 3 hours, except for zips. Why is it so hard to get people to commit only 2/3 that time for a (free!) online tourney

I also prefer longer games, but I'm willing to set them up as it's most convenient for everyone. From my point of view, the games are more of a social thing, a place for BBFers to "meet", chat and actually play a few hands outside the forums. I don't care too much what format we'll use as long as we get together :)

So what's the verdict? Anyone else around who would have liked to join but couldn't because the games were too long?

By the way if you can only play part of the tourney it's not a big deal, I can sub you out and invite someone else to finish - either a friend or a forumer who logged on later and missed the start.

Probably because people don't think this as a club event with schedule. But many are probably also playing life games on Sunday which makes it bad day for a long online game. Too bad week days aren't much better with time zone differences.

I could play on Sunday if someone agrees to play with me.

Perfect for people like me who need to justify their bad results!

I am sorry to say that I will not be able to play in this event...

Well, maybe I am happy to say I will not be able to play in this event. After my long illness, I am going to return to live bridge by playing Saturday and Sunday in a regional here in florida to see how I handle the physical nature of playing at the table again. Good luck to those of you who play in it on Sunday...
