Past that our auction went 1♥,2♥, 4NT, 5♣, 6♦. I feel like this is unscientific as hell and there has to have been a better way to have bid wests hand.

If it is then I'm not aware of it, started playing in October last year and just picked Jacoby 2NT response - so the partnership methods in play at this table were pretty lacking. Researching Splinters makes them seem like a good idea to pick up, I was to concerned with the bidding just going 4♦, 5♦. Which I'd be forced to pass.

3♠ splinter is absolutely normal once you learn it.
At least you were on the same wavelength, for some more advanced players with hearts agreed, bids like 6♦ can be something like "Bid 7♥ with K♦" (admittedly on this auction there are other ways to ask for this with plenty of room, but there are other auctions where this is not the case)
