IMO 1N = 10, 1 = 7. Partner is quite likely to have tenaces that would benefit from protection. If you open 1, however, then the rebid may be awkward.

That's why you bid 1NT to start.

If my concentration is strong enough to count to 15, I open 1NT. If I get stuck somewhere in the middle, I open 1D and hopefully stop drinking for the night.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

OK, a contrary 1 as it's mp's. I'm happy to bid 1 over 1, turn a diamond into a decent spade spot and I would open them.

I'm not so happy to declare nt or hearts after a transfer and yes, I know it's a swinging action.

1 NT. Some good players hate opening NT with two wide open suits, I don't.

This is a perfectly normal 1 opening if and only if you are playing a weak NT. If you play strong NT, this is the hand type it was made for. It will go wrong if partner has a positional stopper in a one of you weak suits and they find the lead, and maybe not even then. (The position might be right, or they can only run four tricks and you have the other nine, etc.)

think about what you will do in the future--If you open 1n most of your future bidding
headaches are finished. If you open 1d virtually all of your future bidding will be a
pain. What will you bid over 1h 1s 1n ???? how will you show p u are this strong after
opening 1d 2c 3d it just gets worse and worse, Open 1N because anything else is much
more likely to lead to disaster.

For some people playing a weak NT, it is a perfectly normal 1 opening.
