Well. In this case, the effect is as if they treated redouble as if it had been double. If I had been called for a ruling at the end of play, I might have done the same thing. Not strictly legal, but practical. I would smack South upside the head though, and correct his misunderstanding of the law. Not to mention that all four players deserve the same for not calling the director. :P
