No. If you switch around a few cards, it is not hard to make this hand into a 2♠ bid (AJxxxx instead) or a 3♠ bid (KJTxxxx instead) or a 4♠ bid (KJTxxxxx). But my choice is still clear. I don't think this is a contradiction. A pass is a bit further (at least to me). OK, make it Axxxxx of spades and KJ outside.

I don't expect to lose a lot of imps if I choose 2S or 3S. But that's also not what we should be talking about a clear choice. Say you give me a normal balanced 14 count. I would open it with 1C/1D, but would I expect to lose a lot of imps if I opened it with the other minor? If I opened it 1NT? Not really. Do I consider the decision choice? Also not.

Opening 1♠ is no good, you make things easy for opponents and hard for your partner. How's he ever going to know you actually had a 3♠ opener? :)

I really do favour a 3♠ opening here - I added the emoticon to show that the suggestion it's a clear-cut 3♠ opener is a joke.

My partner opened 4♠. I don't think it would have done much difference, but I said the hand was a 1 or 4 opening, too much for 3 or 2. Maybe with a different Vul I'd have been right.

South opened 4♠. I don't know why the diagram has North as dealer. In order to defeat 5♦ South has to return a club after winning the first trick with the ♠A and then return another club when in with the ♥A.
