I really don't see a problem with bidding 1NT here - this must promise 4 clubs

It might be the lesser of evils for those with systemic issues surrounding club responses, but surely you see a "problem". It is a suit oriented hand and just a bit more unbalanced than one might expect for a NT response.

It seems quite normal for 1nt to be roughly:

6=11 bal hand with no 4 card major or
weakish hand with long clubs

Nothing to add, "obvious 1 NT" with your hand, even if that had not work as well as your choice. You got lucky. :)

But I would like to highlight one point Bunny made:

"2♣ over 1♦ is the toughest start to an auction in 2/1"

This is very different from any other 2/1 bid, so you better have a good idea how to continue.

I couldn't bring myself to bid 1n (I acknowledge I should have) and ended up playing in 2. Much to the chagrin of my opponents
who said much the same as the replies here - I have to bid 1N.

Actually, pass is an excellent action on this hand! very well thought out. I would score the bids: 2-10,Pass-8,1NT-6

Are you serious, or did I miss the joke?

Welcome back. Thought maybe you had stopped posting other than the macro about Hamman eggs in a basket.

Actually, the point is: someone used her head to came up with an off-beat, but excellent solution to a difficult problem.

Yes, if you know partners hand, this is a great solution.

But if this is passed out, partner may hold AKxx,AKxx,Dxx,Dxx or the like and you miss 3 NT. You can construct hands where even 7 clubs or diamonds has play and you play it in 1 Diamond....
And if the points are equaly divided, you make it MUCH easier for them to find a fit when you pass instead of bidding 1 NT.
So, with all respect for Kathryn, she used her head, came with an off beat solution- and got very lucky that she did not miss a game.
Kind Regards

Roland
