2. Yes, or to be more accurate I play that double is either penalties or a good strong NT opening (i.e. partner is free to pull it)

If I remember correctly, JLall has advocated penalty doubles of strong NT openers in other threads. Perhaps he will comment on this one.

I play a penalty double over strong nt in most of my partnerships.

Not really much to add to what I have said before. I like penalty Xs and you have to pass with this not playing them. It's not the worst thing ever on this hand if you actually have no spot cards as your lead options are horrible, but if partner bids something you have the perfect hand obv.

no 15+ bal in direct seat?
Your choice, live with this one.
Hope you have a less stringent
reopening structure.

I haven't quite said it, either; but it is something to consider.

Question number two is an inquiry about other methods.
The the answers by those persons quoted by Mr. Ace do not address #3: "Would there be folks who would consider not doubling with the given hand, if double showed a strong NT

- I wouldn't act with the methods in the original post, because I can't.
- Playing my preferred methods, I would double, because I have a balanced 17-count.

a 1 suited hand similar to Ax Axx KQJTxx xx both are
designed to be penalty and I want p to leave them in with say 6+
roughly balanced (straining to bid 2c if unable to stand the x)
OR with weak one or 2 suiter to bid their (lowest) suit.
I would be a ton happier with this hand with some tens thrown in

2. I play double as Majors/Minors/Diamonds, but am considering changing to playing that only by a passed hand.
