In fact it IS cold, these are materials that have to be cooled with liquid nitrogen to be kept superconducting. I've shown such experiments (a bit simpler and cheaper though) in schools: A group of students named RINO (http://www.stichtingrino.nl/) went to schools and showed all the cool stuff of low-temperature physics to school classes. Of course it helped that I was studying in the university where superconductivity was discovered (April 1911).

I like the presentation on this one :) Let's spread the word, physics is COOL!

Of course having superconductivity at temperatures 199 K (dry ice) or even 273 K (water) would be great since that might it be doable to use it in trains and make the MagLev train much more efficient. That would be instant Nobel prize stuff if someone would be able to make that work.

Cool stuff! Too bad you need a lot of sapphire crystal, gold and liquid nitrogen (and some way to keep people warm at the same time), otherwise it might actually beat the hell out of japan's magnetic trains. B-)
