X then 3 should show a very good hand, 8+ tricks, but could be passed in partner has a bust.

So what do you fancy for your 2nd bid?

My hindsight being 20/20 (because that is where my head usually is), I kinda wish I had just bullied 5D the first time before they discovered their (perhaps double) fit in the rounded suits.

Now, I try 5D, hoping to survive. The daydream that the auction might go:

(1C)X (P) 2S
(P) back to me is gone.

I'd bid 5. Slam is now unlikely, but I'm not going to try to play this hand in a partscore.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I will bid 5D also. If sitting under the opener I would bid 6. Any secondary S honours may well be in dummy.

5D, as if I bid 3D, it will probably go 3H - p - 4h or p p 3H
and I'll have the same issue again

5D x -1/-2 is still good against 4h =

5D seems canonical. Even if pard has some spades, say Jxxxx, we're probably good for 11 tricks in diamonds.

Trouble is actually if opps bid 5H...

The full deal

I thought I was too strong for an immediate 5, but played in a miserable 5+2 anyway. :(

Slam is a bit lucky tho isn't it?

I don't know if you could get to slam or not. What I do know is that you weren't getting any help from yout catatonic partner, and were left to your own resources.

Over 1H, he had an easy double to show hearts and some values ---standard and mandatory as a psych protector, not really penalty because if there was a psych and the double was normal, they won't play in hearts; informative.

If partner would just have bid 2H like a warmblooded animal should, we would have known that he has some HCP.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.
