I met an aspiring young person who introduced herself as "Mandy" last night on BBO. She was a good player, smart and fun to be around. We had a promising start to our first session and I started to think that I could be on to something good.

Then, on Board 15, this hand came up:

I led the J, which seemed to me at the time to be a perfectly reasonable and natural lead. Then, before I could even blink, the play went A, A, diamond ruff, K, diamond ruff, A, diamond ruff, heart ruff, A, spade. We got two trump tricks and a club. Well, all OK, right?

.

.

.

.

.

That's when it got going. Mandy began to go off on a tirade, saying that any bridge player who was any good at all and in his right mind would have led the K.

I tried frantically to reason with Mandy and explain that the K lead would be bananas without so much as being able to see dummy but she wouldn't listen. After remarking that it was "clear as day" to lead the K and a little more ranting she left the table and since then hasn't said to me another word.

Despite this, I know that the fun and bright person who is Mandy is still there, and the thought of losing her for good is as much as I can bear... :( ..... Help?

If she thinks it's even an option to lead the K you don't want to play bridge with her.

Perhaps there might be a case for a low trump lead, but even that is resulting quite a bit. Personally I'd want nothing to do with someone if they went off on me for a lead like that.

Nobody could find that lead unless they have X-Ray glasses.

APRIL FOOLS

The hand was inspired by a couple of deals from Pavlicek's defensive play contests.

The theme was inspired by this song: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=y-qCuYEUGug

BTW, here's Mandy:
