See poll topic. Does it make a difference depending on the strains being considered (as in, if the opponents had diamonds and spades, or hearts and spades)? Opponents were playing a convenient minor SA style, but feel free to say if that makes a difference as well.

When this (fairly routine) auction came up today I took it as invitational and that's how my partner intended it, but given the cuebids we have available I wonder if that's the best way of doing things.
I once yelled at my partner for discarding the 'wrong' card when he was subjected to a squeeze that I allowed by giving the wrong count with too high a card. Now he's allowed to pitch aces when the opponents have the king in the dummy. At trick 2. When he could have followed suit. And blame me.

I voted invitational because in my metarules, a cuebid of my opponent's suit usually sets up a Game Force.

Also, it does not seem that opps will compete that often here, unlike 1M-2M-(Pass), while 1M-2M-3M as preemptive seems quite useful.

But I'm not an expert nor a creative player, so I actually hope that someone can convince me to change my idea :P

they won't bid 4 over 3 (or 3 over 3) so it's absurd to play this as preemptive (or "blocking") or anything but invitational.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Cannot be preemptive because their suit is below ours.
Cannot be competitive because they haven't outbid us yet.
Thus it can only be invitational.

Completely disagree, the full invite is through 3 which is not GF, this is at most semi-invitational. Partly depends what options partner had when he bid 2 and how good a hand he can have.

Completely disagree, 3 would show a strong hand with only 3 hearts. Another reason why this is obviously invitational: responder has passed, prepared to defend 2, and opener has limited their hand by raising to 2 only, there is much less need for pre-emptive bidding now compared to a situation where the opponents haven't limited their hands.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

KISS invitational. There's no need for this to be competitive imo.

There are auctions where you have more bids than you need. This is one of them.

Indeed, in this country where a club usually shows more than 2 (or if you move all the suits up one), you have 3 (or their lower suit) available as a cue as well. We would normally play 3 inv, 3 FG. I would very rarely double with only 3 hearts here (and would be 19+ bal to do so most of the time), but this is probably a consequence of not meeting the 2 card club much.

This is a very interesting discussion.

However, I believe the wrong question is asked.
NOT: what is 3 ?

In the first place it is necessary to agree with partner on your actions in the sandwich position:
what is ? Double ? 1NT ? 2NT ? 2 ? 2? What are the requirements to bid 2 or 2 ?...

Only in a second tempo you can agree on what the 3 bid would be meaning.

Indeed. And I advise people not to try and give different meanings to the different options. That is bound to create trouble (been there before, if you see what I mean ;)).

Oops. I voted competitive but that's because I can't read. Having looked again at the auction I agree that it is invitational.

Inv.

You are not forced to bid, and there is no bonus playing 1 level higher.

The cue, should be a stopper ask.

If you talked yourself into thinking this is a non-invitational sequence, you need to stop listening to yourself.

If you try to convince others that this is non-invitational, they might stop listening to you too.

Just repeating what others have said :-) I guess the 4 (not counting Kenberg's accidental vote) votes for competitive has surprised me enough to make this post.

Competitive makes no sense! There was no bid after 2H. What are you competing for, by bidding 3H? Why make 2 when you can go down in 3 prize? It is not as if you won't get a chance to bid after opps try 3D...
