MP.

Both sides are playing 2/1 with strong NT.
Your preempt style is not wild and neither partner nor director has ever seen you psyche.
Your call here?

pass. lol. but if you psyche once then 2 (gf) would cause confusion, 3 might allow ops to find that slam

It's passed around to you, the HCP count could be ~9 9 0 22.
If East is the Dealer then vulnerability is not likely to nil.

If North has a flat 21 then 2NT is likely, but if they are better than that maybe 2. Was North sweating? Licking his/her chops? Using their fingers to count?

Open 1 and they're in a pickle because 2 by North would be Michaels.

Is the omission of 2 from the poll deliberate?
It is a very nice solid Club suit. I can see how you might get excited.
Are you sure that no one else in the room has ever seen you psych? Do you want to be invited back?

Why? Maybe they are playing board 14, or board 30, or board 46 ...

If you're going to choose an outright psyche, 1S may not be a bad choice. You might pick off their suit or partner may raise with enough trumps to make it hard for them to double. You don't want to bid 1H because it risks talking them out of a bad break.

If you're going to be aggressive, 3C may cause them problems. I doubt it will stop them finding a reasonable game, but it could cramp their slam auction.

Why? Because Brian is Club Director and the usual number of Boards in a Club game is 24. So 30 and 46 are less likely. 14 maybe.

2 is not on list to cater for bans on psyching strong artificial openings.

Wrong vulnerability for a psyche

Wrong strain for a psyche...if you psyche a minor, you should want that suit led. Psyching a major is far more useful than a minor. 1C takes away literally no bidding space. LHO was probably not opening 1C. So you took away a 2C opening or a 2N opening...but gave them double plus later, with big hands, a cuebid.

Worse, against good players, the only player likely to make a disastrous error is partner. Against weaker players....I prefer not to,psyche. They don’t like it. They don’t understand it (usually) and you’re usually getting a decent result if you leave them to their own devices. In fact, weak players tend, imo, to misbid big hands more than they do average hands.

Funny you should ask.

Two days ago (please don't look it up, I'm anonymising for a number of reasons). 6-board match, we had a -20 card at the time (turns out teammates had pitched a game, so we were actually down 30), against an opponent who exhibits a fair number of behaviours that couldn't be designed to piss me off more effectively (say, trying to make a joke about partner's nick which might have been funny, but not just after taking her for 1100. That was board 1).

99+% of the time, pass, of course. My defence is usually field+.

1 or 3 depending on how I am feeling. I have a certain respect for a 2NT psyche but I think that tends to work better with some hearts to go with the clubs. I don't think giving a single answer is right for problems like this; having some sort of mixed strategy where you throw psyches out a non-zero proportion of the time seems like a more difficult approach for opponents to meet.

Thanks to all who replied.
FWIW, I passed (after hovering over 3) and opps made 7 (with most other tables in 6+1, 5X-4 was a top).
I was curious for alternatives and evaluation of the situation.

I had pretty much this exact hand 3rd in when LHO opened 2 out of turn (nobody vulnerable). I missed my chance, was told by the director that they could bid but couldn't double over my bid. The winning action was to open 4N as 10 tricks was the limit in NT for them, while we would make 2 tricks playing the contract. I opened a prosaic 3, they bid 3N.

Possibly colored by a hand where a few years before I had the 3325 version of that hand and after 3-X-4(on Jx)- opps felt pretty daring bidding 6N on their combined 39 count.

If i need a top 3c else pass. spades are wayyyyyyy too dangerous p might get carried away with 5 and it can easily be horribly bad. p is highly unlikely to get too carried away w/o at least 4 clubs so the danger of slaughter seems dramatically reduced.
