Every convention has its negatives and on this hand I’d like to bid an unhappy 4C….because even though I’d be unhappy about it, I’m even unhappier with other choices. I can’t bid 4C because I generally play that this shows a powerful black 2 suiter.

Since that’s not possible, a quick process of elimination ends up with my passing. I’m not optimistic about getting another chance.

JB’s point about maybe barring partner is something all experienced players recognize. Fortunately, I’ve learned to make my mistakes, in these circumstances, within about ten seconds. Since I ALWAYS pause in these situations, I’m pretty sure I am not giving partner any UI. But I’ve got 16hcp and I’d be very surprised if my passed hand partner has enough to bid.
