Why would anyone pay a premium price for 10% red gold or silver?

You need 50 gold and platinum points to make life master in the ACBL. Unlike silver and red points which are basically attendance points for sectional and regional points, you normally have to do play somewhat well to get gold and platinum points.
I know several flight C level players that travel to regional and nationals in search of gold points. There are even gold rush pair events which awards gold points where the maximum masterpoint limit is 750 points (was 300 and later 500 points in the past?). So possibly earning 1/10 gold points for somebody who rarely can win gold points is definitely an incentive since this can be done from home and all it costs is a nominal amount of money, certainly a lot less than travelling to an out of area tournament.
