Have you had enough turkey? Is the family driving you slightly mad?

If you need a valid excuse to disappear into a quiet room for two hours, I am hosting a free Twixmas Bridge Tournament on Tuesday, 30 December at 7pm GMT.

The Plan:
  • Log on to BBO: Look for paulg's tournament #5614 Paul's Twixmas Pairs.
  • Registration: Opens at 5pm Tuesday, 30 December.
  • The Game: 16 boards of Matchpointed Pairs (and zero washing up).

Guest List:
I've set this up for friends, friends of friends, local club members, and those who used to play in my Saturday morning tournaments. Most of these are intermediate/advanced players but anyone is welcome. If you, or your partner, are new to my games and not an SBU member, please send me a BBO username so I can make sure the computer lets you in!

BBO Forum members are also welcome, just PM your partnership names or see me online.

I'll be online as paulg from 6:30pm if you need a register or partner or get some tech support.

Looking forward to a fun evening!

It is permitted since it is allowed in most UK tournaments. However it is not common in my events so it is unlikely you'll come across it.

You will almost certainly face four-card majors and weak no trump, plus a variety of five-card majors with a short club where 1 promises 4+ diamonds and they'll only have a short club when 4432.

Fun, friendly, players, well run , thanks Paul. I think Carl and I did a fine job representing NA
Just one hiccup during the game when we lost players from Wooler, attributed to a 6 metre tall Yule goat on the loose.

The full results and travellers can be seen at https://app.pianola....s/Session960218

Board 12 (https://app.pianola....8/Travellers/12) caused a problem for all the East-West pairs. Some of the West players playing Acol were handicapped by opening 1 and then rebidding 3NT, which made life difficult as 4 would be Gerber by East. Others struggling by opening 2NT, or equivalent, and not having the methods with a strong minor two-suiter opposite.

Even those who bid the slam struggled and had unconvincing auctions (for example, 2NT - 6NT), but one pair showed some skill by ensuring that the hand with the ace of hearts was not on lead against 7NT.

I think everyone enjoyed the event and it was very easy to direct: no director calls, no adjustments and everyone coped with 7 minutes per board. We lost five players for 25 minutes when Wooler disappeared, but even here I was very lucky as two of these pairs were immediately scheduled to play each other.
