The situation is that one of a suit has been passed around to my partner, who makes a simple suit overcall. Opener passes.
I was surprised to learn that my semi-pickup partners expect me to bid exactly the same as if I were responding to a direct-seat overcall.
Is this common?
Is this playable?

Responding to a balancing overcall

It is normal to balance as if you had a king more than what you have. This is exemplified by the "normal" balancing 1n overcall of 11-14. To compensate for this, their partner needs to respond to this as if they DONT have the king their partner "stole".

The theory of the borrowed king is widely spread, but personally I'd recommend staying away from it.
The part of the idea that applies here is that, if your partner's balancing action can be based on a different range (or even shape!) you should take that into account when deciding on your responses and continuations. This is true regardless of what the exact ranges are.
