I was dealt this hand in a friendly tournament today.
As I was pondering what to bid, and which contract we might end up in, West passed and North opened the bidding.
I have a pretty fair idea of the shape of North's hand, but my question is; what would the experts do?

no. is east ♥ suit source of tricks? except if you find partner with ♣kxxxxx will 3nt be on, and you might find ♣3-1 or 4-0. when you have no sensible bid you pass. bidding 2nt without a no trump hand is not good. if partner is a good player, he will balance with 8-10(11) probably with a X. now opponents in 2♥X, nice score for you.

West balancing when East has 17 points is optimistic. West is highly likely to have a 5 card suit. In ♦ it could even be 6. On balance I would expect to make 3x or be one off so it would be the optimal play NV. In this case the optimum contract appears to be 3♣.

Partner is short in hearts and he's a passed hand so he's allowed to balance on some 7-8 points. If he can double it's yummy and if he bids a suit (or 2NT which is unusual by a passed hand) we are ok also.

If he passes then we go plus on a partscore board, also fine.

So this is a very easy pass which we can do without break in tempo.

I'm no expert and didnt vote because I couldnt decide on NT or pass.

Possum sim says that pass is clearly the only obvious bid by a long way

EDIT Part of the reason I couldn't decide is that I wasn't observant enough to see that partner had passed
