Match-point Pairs.

The opponents 2 is described as "Intermediate 11-14, 6-card suit". You have no particular agreements against this system

Partner protects with 3 and RHO takes a second bid. What now? 5C? 4C? Other?

If you choose the low road and bid 4 ...

So now you have pushed them into a gaming that they were not bidding on their own and the auction is back with you. Do you bid the game that you were not bidding last time? Or double? Or quietly pass?

Over RHO's 3, I rank
1. 4 = CUE. Slight overbid.
2. 5 = NAT.
3. 4 = NAT. Slight underbid.
Now, after LHO's 4, I rank
1. 5 = NAT
2. Pass = NAT but not to my taste.
3. Double = PEN even less palatable.

At this vulnerability I'm inclined to bid 5 straight over their 3 bid. You have a known 10 card fit, a singleton and good cards outside the trump suit. Let them guess at the five level. I agree with Nigel. Keep it simple. 4 and 4 are bids that pussyfoot around the edges. Even if partner has the worst sort of protective hand in 4th position, and 5 doesn't make I believe the likelihood of 4 making for them is more than 50%. The 2 bidder (11-14 6) should have a maximum and an extra trump to "pre-empt" again with 3. We can take a three trick hit against their vulnerable game at this vulnerability.

Given their unusual bidding methods, you have to take into consideration what the rest of the room might be doing, too

I would have asked more about 2H, including the possible responses, but it's late for that now.

Responder wasn't worth an invite over this apparently quite narrowly defined opening, yet now he can bid game vulnerable? Unless we really have to win the tournament I would reach for double.

I'd rather bid 6C than 4C first time

Are you bidding 6C expecting to make? Or as a sacrifice (against a game they don't look like bidding)?

I know that partner might be fairly aggresive in protecting, she hasn't shown a huge hand.

Hi,

I pass.

Playing MP, I am fine with 4C, ... at IMPs, I would bid 5C, but playing MP, ..., MP
is harder.
Now your guess is as good as mine, 3H looks insane (espesially given the colors),
so assuming they know what they are doing may be stretching it.

I can come up easily enough with hands, that raise 3H to 4H.

Most likely they have already won ( or recovered ) the board by bidding 4H.
Assuming on other tables, they open 1H, raise to 2H, we may not be able to discover
our club fit to find the sacrifice, 4H should be a contract with company.

With kind regards
Marlowe

No, I don't think much of west's 3 bid. But it did give me a problem.

I mis-judged here. I think that it is a close decision between 4 and 5 and I wavered between the two bids. But I don't want to punish partner for protecting at MPs and elected only to bid four. Bidding four and then taking a second dip and bidding five when 4 came back was surely wrong - I should either raise to five straight away or raise to four and pass the opps 4.

On this occasion, 4 will fail and 5 is likely to be at least two-off. So I'm better off keeping low.
