Please explain the IMPS

When I kibitz I notice that a winning team with over tricks even can end up with less IMPS than they had before the hand was played. How does this work? Thanks

Not sure that I quite follow the question.

If you bid (say) 3S and make an overtrick, you would expect to lose points if other tables with the same hand bid to 4S and made the same tricks, plus game bonus that you did not contract for at your table. Is that what you meant?
Psych (pron. saik): A gross and deliberate misstatement of honour strength and/or suit length. Expressly permitted under Law 73E but forbidden contrary to that law by Acol club tourneys.

IMPs are calculated by comparing your score with other tables that played the same board. If you get 1 overtrick, but most other pairs got 2 overtricks, you'll get negative IMPs. Or if you're in a partial, while other pairs bid and made game, you'll get negative IMPs because you don't get the game bonus.

A team loses IMPs if the other team bids and makes slam while they play game even with overtricks.


Another possible cause of losing IMPs is making game at one table while their team at the other


table loses a larger penalty than the game bid and made by their other pair.

If you want to see why you won or lost IMPs on a particular hand, switch to the "Other Tables" tab of the results. There you'll see the scores you're being compared with.

what does it mean when a members name is in Red?

Even if they won IMP on that board, it is possible that another board was played at the same time at the other table, and that they lost IMPs on that board.

It means they're disconnected.

What does this have to do with IMP calculations?
