This reference could spark a long discussion. I finished high school in 1956, that's obviously later than the setting for this film, but it brings back memories. One of my favorite teachers in my senior year was Mr. Tighe. Civics in the fall, Psychology in the spring.
Teachers sometimes supplemented the text with short films, shown on very primitive devices. In the Civics portion, he showed us a film (20 or 30 minutes) about the German invasion of Russia. I remember a line from it" The Germans had not counted on the resistance of the brave Russian people". In 1955 Russia was The Enemy, and my guess is that Mr. Tighe showed this film without getting prior approval. In the Psychology portion of the course, we mostly learned about the role of genetics plus Behaviorism ala B. F. Skinner. But of course a term paper was required. Mr. Tighe took me aside and suggested I write mine on Freud. My response was "Who's Freud?". This led to "Ohh, Ken". I said I wanted to write on Parapsychology. Mr. Tighe reluctantly accepted this. Prof. Rhine at Duke claimed he had established that ESP was real and he was now working on Psychokinesis, I read various things for and against, but I remember in particular talking to a Psychology Prof who said that Rhine's ESP studies had not been reproduced by anyone else or even by Rhine away from his own lab. Very interesting.
Not all of my high school experiences were good, some were not at all good. But there were several teachers that I remember to this day as being good teachers and good people.
