My vote only got 130 out of 390.. ? While I was expecting something like 66%

130 votes for pass, 130 for X and 130 for 3 looks ok.

3. The suit is too good - with a worse suit I would double.

Definitely 3 for me, with such clear disparity in both suit length and strength.

The reason I don't like 3 is that we can never play 3.

I would bid 3, with double as a second choice. Pass is too wimpy to consider, but it might be the winning action.

Does double followed by 3 show this, or should we have more of something?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

FWIW: my view is that double then 3 shows more spades and more hand: AK109xx AQx Axx x seems prototypical.

If one were to double, it would be with the intention of passing 3 of a red suit. I would think that double followed by 3 would show a much stronger hand rather than any sort of flexible hand with primary spades.

I think you need more hand, contrary to mikeh I'm happy with these spades.

3 here.

Partner bidding 3 over double with 4-4 (or 3-4) in the majors is too annoying to contemplate but if you reverse my majors I'll double. Still risky on certain shapes but fewer of them. Pass is out.

Because it is in this forum, I assume the poll was of experts. But, I don't know what pool of experts was polled. Just sitting back in my chair and starting to read the results of such poll, I would expect a significant majority to vote Double, with a very small minority of those doublers choosing further action after 3 red. They might also comment about the good things which could happen if advancer does something other than bid 3-red.

To be perfectly clear: I would expect several of those 390 experts to choose 3S, though perhaps not as many as 130.

I don't feel strongly about 3S or double, either could work. Personally I would double today, but might feel differently tomorrow.

I also think double then 3S shows more of a hand, not necessarily more spades.

My suggestion of 6=3=3=1 was as a prototypical hand. I would make the same call with shorter, but strong, spades if I held the right hand. AK10xx AQx Axxx x is equally plausible. AK10xx Axx Axx xx is not, at least for me. I actually dislike this example hand: I'd double and possibly miss the best level AND the best strain, playing 3 opposite QJx Kxxxx xx xxx.

The weaker my hand, the longer my spades, and so on.

Aren't those doubling planning to pass 3?

3 for me.

@OP: As i said in another topic, don't pay much attention to the quantity of votes, pay attention to who voted for what, unless of course voters are coming up with some convincing explanations.

I made my own chart for polls in BBF for example, there are 7 posters who i value their vote = 3 points, i have another 5 posters who i value their votes =2 points , i have 4 posters that i value their votes = 0 points and rest gets 1 points. Posted Image
