If someone forgot to open 1♠ (and as Phil implied, this opening call decision belongs, if anywhere, in the Beginner forum), this is the world's easiest 4♦ call.

I suspect that something went wrong here, since this hand seems to lack any point of interest, in terms of trying to advance the bridge understanding of anyone at the I or higher level.

ok...now it gets somewhat interesting, even tho there are only 2 possible answers, and I think 4♥is clear.

Yes, we may get nailed, but we could have a good save or even a make....partner can't make a negative double on something like x KJxxx xxx xxxx, as one improbable example.

One thing that I've learned the hard way is that overbidding, if that is what this is, works even against good opps because even when they could nail you for a number, that isn't always clear to them. If you make your decisions based on a fear that the opps will always go right in these situations.....quit the game.....you'll be a lot happier.

Looks like a guessing game. 3NT here covers so much ground, can be anything from 11 cold tricks to a total bluff with a diamond runout.

I think I have to bid 4♥. There are so many layouts where we have game or even slam. Thankfully it is matchpoints, if I get -500 and a zero I'll just earn it back next board by making +430 against the field's +420

4♥ looks like a great spot. I like the call, even at r/w.

Some many good things can happen.

1. You might make it. Probably doubled.

2. You jostle them out of a making 3N that they were hoping to play unfettered. They end up in 4N or maybe 5♦ that we might be able to beat.

3. Unless RHO is jokering its not easy to picture a hand where we are beating 3N and not making 4♥, since RHO is probably bidding on a diamond fit. I suppose ♠Qxx in RHO and partner having a slow diamond winner might do it.

4. The only real danger to 4♥ is that RHO isn't bidding on a diamond fit and on power. Then we are in a world of hurt, but I think its well worth the risk.
