Matchpoints. As can be seen, 3NT by NS is cold on a non-club lead, even if diamonds are guessed wrongly. We did not do well in the defence either, only getting them 3 off. After East's semi-psyche light opening, was there anyway we could have done better? Should South have overcalled at any time?

I would bid 2D over 1n

2d over 1H. With length behind the heart opener, getting in early seems to work out well. The playing strength is quite adequate to compensate for one less diamond than we might expect. If we wait around and bid after 1NT all kinds of bad things can happen. We are venturing into a misfit auction vulnerable AFTER they know it is a misfit auction. Just do it the first time, and things will work out.
Mainly, partner will have a clue that you have that kind of playing strength.

South forgot to bid 2D? Did he get called away to the telephone and the waiter passed his hand?

I have no issue with the original pass, but south should dble 1n. This basically always shows a penalty pass type hand.
Passing originally is just hoping to defend 2h x, or anything else that partner can double. Am ok with that.

I would have a ton more sympathy for not bidding 2d (over 1h)
if the opps were vul. S has a very nice suit and strong hand
located behind the opening bidder. If you pass now you will
never be able to convey this kind of power to your partner
later in the bidding.
It is just too difficult to set the NVUL opps enough to
make up for a VUL game and pass here is pretty much
putting all of your eggs into the defensive basket.

I'm bidding 2 ♦ over 1 ♥ at MPs. Partner can't have many ♥s, so is likely to have a ♦ fit.
If new suits are forcing over overcalls, North would bid 2 ♠ so as not to suppress the major. South can bid 2 NT and then whatever North does is right.
If new suits are non forcing constructive, then 2 ♥ by North, 2 NT by South and in same situation.
