Hal Varian, Google’s chief economist, predicts that the job of statistician will become the “sexiest” around. Data, he explains, are widely available; what is scarce is the ability to extract wisdom from them.

I had the first 400 digits of pi memorized. It's been a few years, though. The top pi memorizers are in the tens of thousands.

How much soap should I put in my washing machine and dishwasher?

Quote

“Nobody thinks they use too much soap,” said Vernon Schmidt, who has been a repairman for almost 35 years and is the author of a self-published book, “Appliance Handbook for Women: Simple Enough Even a Man Can Understand.” But apparently most of us are in denial.

Washing machines and dishwashers are made to use far less water now than older models and, therefore, need less soap. And detergents have also become increasingly concentrated. So a little goes a long way.

“Most people use 3.14159265358979... times the amount of soap they need, and they’re pouring money down the drain,” Mr. Schmidt said.

That pi pie looks a lot like a pi cheesecake imo.

If it had maple syrup in it with bacon on top, it would be a glorious sight to behold.

I think that was a Pi cheesecake.

For dessert tonight my wife made a maple walnut tart with chocolate lettering. No bacon. Thanks Aberlour10 for the Pi Day reminder.

From Denmark, Hacker Punk and Hit in Tow

By JOHN ANDERSON

Quote

AMERICAN cinema’s debt to its foreign-born directors is like sea travel’s debt to the starry night. From Fritz Lang to Ang Lee, filmmakers have come fleeing political oppression, limited opportunity, even bad taste. Far fewer have been driven from their native shores by overwhelming success and the feeling that they had nowhere to go but down.

But after the European release of something like “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” the Danish director Niels Arden Oplev said, you can’t go home again. Not professionally, anyway.

“We sold three million tickets,” he said of what was the most successful European film of 2009 and one that arrives in the United States on Friday surfing the publishing tsunami of the late Swedish novelist Stieg Larsson’s series of crime novels known as the Millennium Trilogy. “If you add all of Europe, the sales are more like eight million tickets. So I just felt, I don’t want to be in Scandinavia right now.
