In my town, the grocery store was open, but the hardware store was closed.

Not in Rochester. OTOH, Wegman's is a large supermarket chain, not a mom-and-pop grocery store - although that's how it got started, many years ago. Wegman's stores are opened 24/7, and iirc, the only days they're closed are Christmas and New Year's.
